WHAT ARE SOUND WAVES

Sound is one of the natural waves which plays a vital role in our day to day life and is an integral part of work in various branches of science and technology .
The basic features of sound waves are as :
  • Sound is a mechanical or elastic waveform .
  • sound wave can not travel without the presence of a medium .
  • Sound wave can be  longitudinal or transverse . The sound propagating through air or any other gas is  a longitudinal wave and sound propagating through solid can be longitudinal or transverse , depending upon the mode of excitation .
  •  The velocity of sound wave through air depends upon several factors like density, temperature , humidity and wind - velocity etc .
  • The velocity of sound through air at normal temperature and pressure is 332m/s .
  • The sound waves of frequency range 20 Hz to 20 kHz are audible to the human beings . it is called audio frequency range .The frequency below 20 Hz are called infrasonics and those above 20 kHz are called ultrasonics
