WHAT IS WAVE MOTION

Wave motion  -is the form of disturbances which travels through the material medium due to repeated periodic motion of the vibrating particles about their mean position  and the motion is being handed over from one particle to another .

Characteristics of wave motion -

  • Only the wave travels forward whereas the particles of the medium vibrate about their mean position .
  • The velocity of the particles about their mean position is different from the velocity  of the wave .
  • The wave travels with uniform velocity whereas the velocity of the particles is different at different at different positions .
  • The velocity of the particles is maximum at mean position and minimum at extreme position .
  • There is regular phase difference between the various particles of the medium .

Types of wave motion -

There are two types of wave motion .
  • Longitudinal wave motion
  • Transverse wave motion
