Definition
The dual characteristics property of matter is called dual nature of light .The phenomena like interference , diffraction and polarisation of light were experimentally known and indicate that light is of wave nature . On the other hand ,photoelectric effect and Compton effect illustrate the particle nature , i.e. electromagnetic radiation or light is of particle nature .
de - Broglie hypothesis -
According to de -Broglie hypothesis , the dual nature should not confined to radiation but should also be exhibited by all moving particles like electrons ,protons , atoms and molecules etc .
The wave associated with these particles are known as matter waves or de -Broglie waves whose wavelength is given by -
λ= h/p =h/mv
where m is mass of particles
v is the velocity of the particle
h is Planck's constant
p is the momentum of particle
λ is the wavelength of the wave
This is the de -Broglie 's relation
